Zero-Energy Home Plans from PowerHouse Designs

Zero-energy doesn’t happen by accident.

Achieving a design goal as ambitious as zero-energy doesn’t happen by accident. Every aspect of the home’s design must be optimized, and every construction detail executed flawlessly. We’ve built dozens of net-zero homes and have refined our design and building practices along the way.

F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you build?

We are based in Bellingham and build within 30 minutes of there. However, we can design homes for anywhere.

Can you build to plans I have already purchased?

We specialize in zero-energy homes, and most off-the-shelf house plans and custom plans from other designers do not meet this efficiency standard. However, we are sometimes able to work with your designer to modify plans to meet the zero-energy goal. Often, it is easiest to start from scratch.

What is a zero-energy home anyway?

A net-zero-energy home produces at least as much renewable energy as it uses. In most cases, rooftop solar panels are used. Net-zero homes are connected to the municipal electrical grid, drawing power at night or on very cloudy days and adding power to the grid when the sun is shining. The net effect is to add more enegy to the grid than is drawn from it over the course of a year.

Can I get the house I want for my budget?

We design specifically for your budget, your goals, and your site.

Can you design my home?

Yes, we would be delighted to discuss your goals and work with you to design a custom zero-energy home to be constructed by your contractor of choice.

Do you build multifamily and commercial projects?

Most of the homes we design and build are single-family residential, with or without an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). We do, however, occasionally take on commercial or multifamily building projects that meet a high standard of efficiency.

What are your preferred building techniques?

We use insulated concrete forms (ICF) slab-on-grade foundations, structural insulated panels (SIPs), triple-pane windows, heat pumps for heating, cooling, and hot water, and heat-recovery ventilators (HRVs) for continuous ventilation. We do energy modeling as we design to ensure our homes achieve zero-net-energy or better.

Award-Winning Home Design

Our innovative home designs are now available to builders worldwide. Each of these plans has been built at least once and all are compliant with the 2012 International Residential Code (IRC). If you don’t see what you need here, we would be delighted to discuss your goals and work with you to design a custom zero-energy home that can be built by your contractor of choice.
